Frequently Asked Questions
Guidance on the installation and maintenance of our innovative microalgae curtain-wall systems.
How is the system installed?
The Purifying Facade is a modular, curtain-wall system integrated directly into the building envelope — for both new builds and retrofits. Each installation is engineered around the building's specific facade geometry and connects into the existing HVAC and air distribution system. We're currently validating installation logic through a digital mock-up with our research partner HSLU before moving to physical demonstrators.
What is the maintenance cycle?
The system is designed for low-maintenance operation. Circulation runs automatically using Archimedes' buoyancy principle, requiring minimal energy input. Microalgae are cleaned and harvested on a monthly basis, with the mechanical process fully automated to keep upkeep intensity low compared to traditional green facades or living walls.
Can the biomass be harvested?
Yes. Microalgae biomass is systematically harvested and can be valorised in several downstream markets, including pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, biofertilizers, and animal feed. This turns routine maintenance into an additional revenue stream rather than a cost, while supporting the system's circular economy positioning.
What is the lifespan of the system?
We're still in the early feasibility stage of R&D — currently progressing through Phase 0–1 of our roadmap (problem framing and system concept development) with HSLU. Long-term lifespan figures will be established through our upcoming building mock-ups and demonstrators (Phase 5) and fire/certification testing (Phase 6), so we can give you a validated number rather than an estimate. (Alternatively, simply remove this FAQ until that data exists.)
How does it contribute to ESG goals?
The system directly supports ESG and carbon-neutrality targets by actively capturing CO₂ — at a rate up to 11 tons per m² per year in the Premium version — while generating oxygen and harvestable biomass. Beyond emissions performance, it visibly demonstrates climate leadership and strengthens ESG reporting and compliance for building owners, developers, and corporate occupants.
